The Story Behind the Churchill Size Cigar
In 1895, after graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Winston Churchill and a fellow officer travelled to Cuba, which was then in a battle for independence from Spain. Churchill spent just a few months in Cuba, but it was there that he fell in love with cigars. He quickly became hooked on one of its most famous products, favoring brands like Romeo y Julieta and La Aroma de Cuba. For the rest of his life, friends and Havana dealers would send him regular shipments, ensuring he had access to his prized Cubans, even in times of crisis and war. It then became known and famous for Churchill to be seen without a cigar, rarely.
The size ‘Churchill’ is named after the legendary cigar aficionado Sir Winston, but the timing of its origin is disputed. Story has it that after a visit by Sir Winston himself to the Romeo Y Julieta factory, it was then created as the famous Churchill size Cigar. This was in the late 1940s, when Sir Winston was an avid smoker of cigars and of Romeo in particular.
Sir Winston Churchill was a man of many facets. Because of this, the Churchill cigar line pays them homage by dedicating a cigar to each of those, with many unique tastes and outstanding complexity.
The Churchill-sized cigars are renowned for their large ring gauge, traditionally 7 inches by a 47-ring gauge, and high strength. This cigar collection is the ideal smoke for the true cigar aficionado.
